Of MediaInternational media such as TV network and magazine
always give people in an information age mixed feelings.
Like many other things, media is double-edged.
As primary channels of information,
TV and magazine are convenient and economic sources of information for knowledge, entertainment, and shopping.
Interestingly,sometimes the same piece of information varies considerably
in its influences on audiences of different age.
For example,in a TV commercial,a beautiful lady promotes a certain brand of perfume,
which supposablely makes girls more attractive to boys.
For potential grown-up buyers,
the ad is useful because they might be spending time searching for such products.
We se time in shopping and making decision by making use of such advertisements.
However, a age girl might get the wrong idea about the concept of perfume.
She could get money from her parents to buy the advertised product.
Worse yet, she might use the eal strategy employed in the commercial
to get ahead in the future.
This is classic bad influence of media for young people?s overspending
and inropriate behiors.
However, we find it very difficult to weigh between merits and problems of media
because they are often tightly incorporated.
For instance, violent scenes in movies are believed to be
partially responsible for violence-related crimes,
particularly those committed by young people.
But on the contrary,such movies also give people a channel to release their anger,anxiety, and pressure.
Moreover,these movies show us bad and evil as well as punishments for wrongdoings.
Imagine we live in a world whose media is completely clean in such sense.
The dark side of media does not disear just because we do not talk about it.
Nevertheless certain kinds of information such as porn are better kept away from young people.
In conclusion, media should not be seen simply as bad or good
because we need to use information properly to the best of our ability.
But for certain segments of viewers,
we should be very careful with regard to the content of information
and take measures to keep viewers from possible harmful influences of media.
Of StudiesStudies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.
Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring;
for ornament, is in discourse;
and for ability, is in the judgement and disposition of business.
For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one;
but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs,
come best from those that are learned.
To spend too much time in studies is sloth;
to use them too much for ornament,is affectation;
to make judgement wholly by their rules, is the humour of a scholar.
They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience:
for natural abilities are like natural plants,that need pruning by study;
and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large,
except they be bounded in by experience.
Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them;
for they teach not their own use;
but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation.
Read not to contradict and confute;
nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse;
but to weigh and consider.
Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed,and some few to be chewed and digested;
that is, some books are to be read only in parts;
others to be read, but not curiously;
and some few to be read wholly,and with diligence and attention.
Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others;
but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books;
else distilled books are, like common distilled waters, flashy things.
Reading makes a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man.
And therefore,if a man write little,he had need he a great memory;
if he confer little, he had need he a present wit;
and if he read little, he had need he much cunning, to seem to know that he does not.
Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics sule;
natural philosophy deep; moral gre;
logic and rhetoric able to contend.

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and bre enough to face himself when he is afraid; one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory.
Build me a son whose wishes will not take the place of deeds; a son who will know Thee... and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.
Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort, but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge. Here, let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those that fail.
Build me a son, whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men; one who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.
And after all these things are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor, so that he may always be serious, yet never take himself too seriously. Give him humility. so that he may always remember the simplicity of true greatness, the open mind of true wisdom and the meekness of true strength. Then, I, his father, will dare to whisper he not lived in vain."

Afternoon was Mrs. Conroy's forite time of day. After a hard day at work, her eyes were tired and her feet hurt. She enjoyed the nice long nap she took on the bus. Mrs. Conroy had made friends with the bus driver, Mr. Angstrom. He always woke her up before her stop. She usually felt fresh as a daisy(精神饱满的) when she got off the bus.
But today was different. Mr. Angstrom wasn't driving. A small man in a wrinkled uniform sat in the driver's seat.
"Where's Mr. Angstrom?" asked Mrs. Conroy, dropping her money into the box."I don't know. Sick, I guess. I just work here, lady. Step to the rear."Mrs. Conroy hoped that Mr. Angstrom was all right. She didn't like this new driver. She decided not to sleep on the way home today. She didn't want to ask this driver to wake her. He didn't look like the type who'd want to do anyone a for.
Mrs. Conroy looked out the window. It was a warm afternoon. Though she tried to keep her eyes open, the gentle rocking of the bus had a lulling effect. Within a few minutes her eyes closed. Her head dropped to her shoulders. In spite of herself, Mrs. Conroy fell fast asleep.
The next thing Mrs. Conroy knew, a hand was on her shoulder. Someone was shaking her awake.
"Wake up, lady. We've come to the end of the line. Wake up."
Mrs. Conroy blinked and opened her eyes. The bus driver looked down at her. "I said, this is the end of the line, lady. Time to get off the bus."
Mrs. Conroy peered out the window. "Where am I?" she asked. "I was supposed to get off at Es Avenue."
"You're at the last stop, lady. Come on, get off the bus. I he a schedule to keep to."
Mrs. Conroy was hing trouble waking up. She staggered to her feet.The bus driver took her arm and helped her down the aisle. As she stepped off the bus, she felt a sense of panic. "Wait a minute," she said in a shrill voice. "This isn't Es Avenue. Where am I? How can I get home?"
"Cool off, lady. I told you, you're at the end of the line. We all make it here sooner or later."
"But why can't I ride back with you?" she pleaded. "I he the fare!"
"Sorry, lady," he said as he closed the door. "It's against the rules."
Mrs. Conroy watched the bus disear down the road. She looked around and tried to figure out what part of the city she was in. Suddenly the sun seemed awfully bright.
Mrs. Conroy squinted(斜视). She didn't recognize this place. There were no trees around, no street signs, and no people. The city seemed to he ended miles back. She couldn't get her bearings. There was nothing to see in any direction. Nothing at all. Mrs. Conroy wondered if she were still dreaming.
"Are you ready, Madam?"
The voice came from behind her. Mrs. Conroy whirled around, her heart beating rapidly.
"Who? What? Are you speaking to me?"
A tall, handsome man in a blue pin-striped suit stepped forward. His suit reminded her of the one that her boss, Mr. Burton, always wore. What was a businessman doing so far out here in the country?
The man smiled. "Yes, Mrs. Conroy. I've come to meet you. It's time to go now."
"Go where? What are you talking about? And how do you know my name?"
The man in the blue suit smiled.
"I know it must be very confusing, Mrs. Conroy. Most people seem to feel that way at first. But as we go along, everything will become quite clear." He took her by the arm. "It's all right," he said kindly. "Just come with me."
"No! I'm not going anywhere with you. Why should I? I don't even know who you are," Mrs. Conroy said. She pulled away from the man and stepped back.
The man smiled gently. "I'm only an assistant, Mrs. Conroy," he said.
"Well, Mr. Assistant, there must be some mistake. I just fell asleep and stayed on the bus too long. Then the driver made me get off. He wouldn't take me back with him! He talked some nonsense about rules. I'm going to call the company and report him!"
"He was just doing his job, Mrs. Conroy," the man said patiently.
"But he left me out here alone," Mrs. Conroy said. "Now it's getting late. I he to get home and fix dinner. What kind of bus driver refuses to take passengers?"
The man in the blue suit stepped toward Mrs. Conroy and took her arm again. This time she didn't resist. He patted her hand and smiled down at her. "You'll he to forgive the driver for being rude, Mrs. Conroy. He's new at the job. But he was only following orders. You see, Mrs. Conroy, this is the end of the line. You don't he to worry about getting home and fixing dinner. Our passengers only go one way."
